Rincuorati dal successo dell'album precedente, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, e dal successivo tour, i Pink Floyd pubblicano un altro album e partono con un tour mondiale che riproporrà, oltre alle canzoni del nuovo lavoro e di alcuni vecchi successi, anche la riedizione integrale di Dark Side Of The Moon, che non veniva più suonata per intero dal concerto di Knebworth del luglio 1975. La preparazione del light show che avrebbe accompagnato i concerti fù curata in ogni dettaglio senza badare a spese, con l'idea che ogni concerto doveva essere migliore del precedente. Furono chiamati a collaborare il designer Mark Fisher e Marc Brickman,che già si occuparono dei concerti di The Wall nell'80-81, e anche Peter Wynne-Wilson, che ideò le luci dei Pink negli anni '60. Insomma uno spettacolo di luci moderno che ricreò lo stile psichedelico dei vecchi Pink Floyd. La stima delle spese giornaliere per la preparazione di ogni concerto era di 500.000 dollari !!! Secondo alcuni calcoli alla fine del tour furono venduti oltre 5 milioni di biglietti che fruttarono circa 100.000 milioni di dollari. Tutto questo alla faccia di chi credeva che i Pink Floyd non avessero più un seguito senza Roger Waters....

La serata d'apertura del più lungo stage dei Pink Floyd all'Earls
Court fù guastata dal crollo di una tribuna da 1.200 posti in fondo
alla sala, un attimo dopo che i musicisti erano saliti sul palco. Nessuno
si infortunò gravemente anche se otto persone finirono all'ospedale
con problemi alla schiena, ferite, contusioni e stati di choc (alcuni fecero
un volo di quasi sei metri). Lo show venne riprogrammato per il 17 ottobre
e a tutti gli spettatori che occupavano la tribuna crollata fù regalata
una maglietta, come risarcimento da parte della band.

I Pink Floyd entrarono a far parte della prestigiosa "Hall of Fame"
nel corso di una cerimonia che vide protagonisti anche David Bowie, Jefferson
Airplane, Little Willie John, Gladys Knight &The Pips, Shirelles, Velvet
Underground, Pete Seeger e Tom Donahue. La band ricevette il riconoscimento
da Billy Corgan degli Smashing Pumpkins, dopodiché Gilmour e Wright
(Mason rimase in platea) furono raggiunti sul palco da Corgan per un'esecuzione
"unplugged" di Wish You Were Here. Gilmour rimase sul palco per
il gran finale: con Arlo Guthrie, membri dei Jefferson Airplane, Stevie Wonder
e David Byrne eseguì Goodnight Irene di Pete Seeger. Agli ospiti fù
regalato un CD promozionale (EMI OPRO 10467) con 29 canzoni, in memoria dell'evento;
vi erano comprese Wish You Were Here, Money e See Emily Play.
